How to get a temporary phone number for verification

  1. Choose a number. Pick any active temp number above or from the full list. If you need a number from a particular country, check the country list below.
  2. Enter it on the signup form. Type the number, including its country code, wherever the website or app asks for a phone number, then request the verification code.
  3. Read the code. Open the number's page and refresh. The SMS usually arrives within seconds to a couple of minutes. Copy the code and finish your signup.

What is a temporary phone number?

A temporary phone number (also called a temp number, disposable number or throwaway number) is a phone number you use for a short time instead of your personal one. The numbers on TemporarySMS are virtual numbers hosted online: incoming texts appear on a web page instead of a phone, so you can receive SMS online without a SIM card.

People sometimes search for a "fake phone number" to receive SMS. Our numbers aren't fake: they are real, working numbers whose inboxes are shared publicly. That's what makes them free and instant.

Common reasons to use one:

  • verifying a new account on a social network, messenger or marketplace without giving out your real number;
  • receiving a one-time password (OTP) for a free trial or a signup form;
  • testing the SMS verification flow of your own app or website;
  • keeping your personal number off marketing lists and away from spam calls.

Temporary number vs burner, virtual and non-VoIP numbers

All four keep your real number private, but they suit different jobs:

Temporary numbers for WhatsApp, Telegram, Gmail and more

You can use a temp number to receive verification codes from most apps and websites. Pick a service to see numbers for it:

Popular apps sometimes block shared numbers or already have an account on them. If a code doesn't arrive, request it again on a different number.

Is a temporary phone number safe to use?

Every SMS that arrives on our numbers is visible to anyone who opens that number's page. That's what makes the service free, but it also means anyone can read a code sent to the number, and you could lose access to an account tied to it.

Good uses

  • One-off signups and free trials
  • Newsletter, forum and app accounts you don't care about
  • Testing SMS verification in your own projects
  • Keeping your number off marketing lists

Don't use it for

  • Banking, payment or crypto accounts
  • Your main email, Apple or Google account recovery
  • Government, health or other identity-linked services
  • Any account you'll need to log in to again later

Temporary phone number FAQ

Pick any number marked active on this page or in the full list and copy it. There is nothing to install and no account to create. Enter the number on the signup form, then open that number's page and refresh to read the incoming SMS.

Yes, that is what the numbers are for. One-time passwords and verification codes usually appear on the number's page within seconds to a couple of minutes. If a code does not arrive, the sender may be blocking that number or country, so request a new code on a different number.

A burner number usually comes from a paid app: it is private to you and can often send texts and make calls. A temporary number on TemporarySMS is free and receive-only, and its inbox is public. Both keep your real number out of signups; burner apps suit ongoing private conversations, temporary numbers suit one-off verifications.

We do not label numbers as VoIP or non-VoIP, and we cannot guarantee that any number will pass a service's VoIP check. Banks, payment apps and some messengers reject VoIP or widely shared numbers. If a number is refused, try one from another country; for services with strict checks, a paid SIM-based (non-VoIP) number is the reliable option.

Often, yes, especially for a first signup. Because the numbers are public, a popular app may already have an account on a given number, or may block it. If that happens, pick another number. Each supported service (WhatsApp, Telegram, Gmail and more) has its own page linked from this one.

A number stays listed for as long as its upstream provider keeps it online, and is removed from the active list when it goes offline. Inboxes refresh every 5–15 minutes. Do not use a temporary number for an account you will need to recover later, because the number may not be available when you need it.

No. The numbers are receive-only: you can read incoming SMS in your browser, but you cannot send messages or make or receive voice calls.

Using a temporary number to keep your real number private is legal in most countries. Every message on our numbers is public, though, so never use one for banking, your main email, or any account tied to your identity, and respect the terms of the services you sign up for.
